最近学んだ英語!5
バンクーバーのダウンタウン、図書館の近くにあるThe Buzz Cafe & Espresso Barというカフェがおしゃれでオススメです。絵画カフェとも呼ばれていて、写真一枚目のようにカフェの壁にたくさん絵画が飾られていて、気に入ったものは購入なんかもできるそう。
カフェで勉強とか作業すると効率良いんだけど、カロリー摂取しちゃうのがよくないネ。
ということで今回はひっさびさに学んだ英語表現を紹介しておきたいと思います。自分のための備忘録でもある。
例文つきで覚えておきたい表現、単語
get settled in somewhere:(新しい家などに)落ち着く
ex) The organization helps immigrants to get settled in Vancouver. (その組織は移民がバンクーバーで快適に過ごす手助けをしている。)
stand out from:際立つ、目立つ
ex) He wants to satnd out from the team. (彼はチームのなかで目立ちたいと思っている。)
figure out:解決する、理解する
ex) I have to figure out how to solve this problem.(この問題の解決策を見つけなければならない。)
reach out:手をのばす
ex) I reached out and grabbed my wallet. (手を伸ばして、財布をつかんだ)
get along:仲良くやっていく、先へすすむ
ex) We get along. (わたしたちは仲が良い)
get the hang of:コツをつかむ
ex) I am starting to get the hang of it. (コツがわかってきた)
take initiative:率先する
ex) Take initiative, and you will win. (先んずれば人を制す)
lion's share:大きな分け前
これは色んな使い方ができる。
ex) He had to take on the lion's share because his co-workers left the office early in personal reasons. (彼の同僚たちが個人的な理由で先に帰ったので、彼は不当に多くの仕事を背負う羽目になった)
ex) He will take the lion's share. (彼は自分ばかりうまい汁を吸おうとする)
ex) Our company has lion's share in this market. (わたしたちの会社はこのマーケットで大きなシェアを占めている)
temptaation:誘惑
ex) When I'm on a diet, the hardest temptation to resist is sweets. (ダイエット中に避けなければならない一番むずかしい誘惑はスイーツだ)
tense:緊張した
ex) I work in a tense place.(緊張感の中で仕事をする)
faint:気が遠くなる
ex) She fainted out from the heat.(彼女は暑さのため卒倒した)
obstacle:障害
ex) I have to overcome many obstacle. (たくさんの障害を乗り越えなければならない)
resent:腹を立てる
ex) I resent his rude attitude. (彼の失礼な態度に腹が立つ)
impatient:せっかちな
ex) Don't be so impatient. (そんな急ぐなよ)
willing:すすんで、自発的な
ex) I'm willing to help you. (手伝いますよ)
relucatant:しぶしぶ
ex) He was relucatant to ask the questions. (彼は質問するのを嫌がった)
hesitate:ためらう
ex) Do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. (なにか不明な点があればお気軽にご連絡ください)
favoritism:えこひいき
ex) He shows favoritism to relatives or close friends. (彼は親類や親しい友人にえこひいきをする)
exclude:除外する
ex) They excluded him from the team. (彼らは彼をチームから仲間はずれにした)
sneaky:卑劣な
ex) He is a sneaky person. (彼はずるいやつだ)
offend:怒らせる、傷つける
ex) I don't want you to offend me. (気を悪くしないでほしい)
intention:意図、目的
ex) She had the wind of his true intentions. (彼女は彼の真の意図をかぎつけた)
ex) a secret intention (下心)
perspective:考え方、見方
ex) You have a great perspective. (君はいい視点を持っている)

take after someone:真似る、似る
ex) I don't take after my father. (わたしは父に似ていない)
get after someone:叱る、あとを追う
ex) I have to get after the students. (わたしは生徒を叱らなければならない)
look after someone:世話をする
ex) I look after my sister's children when she are working. (姉が仕事している間、彼女の子どもの世話をする)

pass away:終わる、死ぬ
ex) When did he pass away? (彼はいつ亡くなったのですか)
pass out:気を失う、酔いつぶれる
ex) I passed out because I drank too much. (飲みすぎて潰れた)

save time:時間を節約する
ex) We will save time if we use a train instead of walking. (歩く代わりに電車を使うと時間を節約できる)
save the day:危機を乗り切る
ex) To save the day, she must stand up to her fate. (その危機を乗り越えるために、彼女はその運命に立ち向かわなければならない)
save the date:プレ招待状
正式な招待状の前に送るやつのこと!

just in time:ギリギリ間に合う
ex) I got to school just in time. (ぎりぎり学校に間に合った)
on time:時間通りに
ex) I arrived at school on time. (時間通りに学校についた)

used to:以前はよく〜した
ex) I used to watch animated movie when I was a child. (子供の頃はよくアニメの映画を観た)
be used to:慣れている
ex) I am used to cooking for myself. (自分で料理するのに慣れている)
その他単語
gory:血みどろの
gross:ひどい
stab:刺す
hilarous:めっちゃおもしろい
a friend of a friend:友だちの友だち
my friend's friendって言いがちだけどこの言い方のほうが普通ぽい。
vague <----> vivid + memory
曖昧な記憶 <----> 鮮明な記憶
stingy:ケチ
delegate:委任する
以上知らなくてもなんとかなるけど知ってたら幅が広がるなと思った英語でした。pass awayとpass outはよくある間違いだけど間違えたら死んじゃうので気をつけたいですね。
